Catheter Care Awareness

Catheter support is often intimate care , and quality depends on doing the basics consistently: protecting privacy and dignity, maintaining a safe catheter system, reducing infection risk, recognizing complications early, and escalating promptly when something changes. These expectations align directly with the regulator’s standards for dignity, consent, safe care, and governance.

What you'll learn

Explain common reasons a person may use a urinary catheter.
Identify and differentiate catheter types used in community and social care contexts: intermittent, indwelling urethral, suprapubic, and external catheter options.
Describe the impact catheter use can have on daily life, dignity, comfort, mobility, sleep, relationships, and social participation, and how support needs may change over time.
Apply core catheter-care principles in routine support: maintain a closed system, avoid unnecessary disconnections, prevent kinks/traction, position drainage correctly, support hygiene routines, and reduce contamination risks during bag emptying.

Course content

5 modules

Understand your role and responsibilities when supporting someone with a urinary catheter. This module covers consent, dignity, privacy, delegated healthcare activities, competence, professional boundaries and when to stop and escalate.
Explore why catheters are used, the main catheter types and how each may affect daily routines. Learners will consider mobility, confidence, privacy, relationships, independence and how to provide sensitive, person-centred support.
Learn the essential daily practices that support safe catheter care. Topics include maintaining a closed drainage system, correct bag positioning, hand hygiene, safe emptying, reducing infection risk and working within the person’s care plan.
Recognise common catheter complications such as blockage, leakage, infection symptoms, spasms and bleeding. Learners will practise safe checks within their role, identify urgent warning signs, escalate appropriately and document concerns clearly.
Complete a final assessment covering consent, catheter types, infection prevention, safe system maintenance, scope of practice, escalation and documentation. Questions focus on applying knowledge to realistic catheter-care situations.
