Data Protection and Confidentiality (GDPR)

Every visit you make runs on trust. The person you support lets you into their home, their history and their health, and the law expects you to keep all of it safe. This course shows you what counts as confidential information, why you do not need consent to write a care note, and how to store, share and dispose of records without putting anyone at risk. You will follow one care team through a week where small choices matter: a phone photo, a question from a daughter, a handover sheet that goes missing. By the end you will recognise a data breach when you see one and know exactly who to tell, fast. Up to date for the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, so what you learn matches the law as it stands.

Course content

6 modules

What counts as personal data in care, why health information gets extra protection as special category data, and how confidentiality covers everything you see, hear and write on shift.
The seven data protection principles and seven lawful bases in plain terms. Why care records do not run on consent, what consent is really for, and how the law applies to you personally.
Safe storage for paper and digital records, why personal phones and messaging apps cause breaches, and how to dispose of confidential information securely.
Who needs to know, who does not, and how to share safely: the minimum information, sent securely, to the right person. Includes safeguarding and requests from family.
What a data breach looks like on shift, from a lost handover sheet to a locked-out system. The steps to take the moment you spot one, and why reporting fast protects everyone.
The graded assessment. Ten questions drawn from a 30-question bank covering the whole course. Answer them as you would act on shift.
