Standard 1: Understand Your Role

A relative asks you to give an extra tablet. Someone you support presses a £20 note into your hand. A colleague says "we don't bother with the frame for her". In your first weeks with any employer, moments like these decide whether you stay safe, keep the person safe and keep your record clean. This course follows Maureen, an experienced care worker starting at a new agency, through her first six weeks. You will see what your job covers and where it stops, which codes and policies you work to and why, how a working relationship differs from a friendship, and how to work with families, advocates and other professionals, including where to go when a partnership breaks down. It covers the knowledge part of Care Certificate Standard 1 (March 2025). Your employer will observe the practical parts on shift.

What your job covers and where it stops: your duties, your rights and duties as an employee, the Code of Conduct, how your own values shape your work, and where a career in care can go.
The policies, plans and practices your employer has agreed: where to find them, why you work within them, and what to do when asked to step outside them, raise a concern or own up to a mistake.
Who you work with, and how a working relationship differs from a friendship: your duties to the person, their family and advocates, and how to handle gifts, phone numbers and invitations.
Why care works best as a partnership with the person, family, advocates and other professionals, what helps it work, and where to get support when a partnership or a conflict goes wrong.
Ten questions drawn from the whole course. You need 70% to pass and have up to three attempts.
