Standard 13: Health and Safety

Most of the things that hurt people in care are not dramatic. A bike left across a corridor, a sling with the label washed off, a bottle of bleach decanted into something that looks like squash, a colleague who has stopped eating lunch. Standard 13 is about noticing those things and knowing exactly what the law expects you to do next. Over one week in a supported living scheme you will follow Lorraine and Hannah as they spot hazards, decide what they are and are not allowed to do, deal with a slip, a chemical and a night-time fire alarm, and then face the hardest part: a colleague running on empty. By the end you will be able to say what your employer owes you and what you owe the people you support, why a risk assessment comes before action, what you must not touch until you are trained and signed off, what to do when something goes wrong, and where to turn when the job gets heavy. Written for the 2025 Care Certificate, including the new outcome on mental health and personal wellbeing.
